This help article will cover how a user can backup their existing emails/files from their @valleyinternet.com email, or how to transfer them to a new email account.
Importing your account's email to a new Gmail account:
If you decide to use Google's Gmail service, you can use their built-in tools to migrate your email over to the new account:
- Log in to your old @valleyinternet.com account on Google's website:
- Click on the gear icon in the top-right, and click on See all settings.
- Enable POP access on your account:
- Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab near the top.
- In the "POP download" section, select Enable POP for all mail.
- At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
- Enable access from "less secure apps" on your account settings:
- Log out of your valleyinternet.com account by clicking your user icon in the top-right, then selecting Sign Out.
- If you don't have a new Gmail account ready yet, now is the time to create it. If you're not sure how, you can follow Google's instructions on their website:
- Log in to your new Gmail account. Click on the gear icon in the top-right, and click on See all settings.
- Click the Accounts and Import tab near the top.
- Click Import mail and contacts.
- In the new window, enter your @valleyinternet.com email address then click Continue.
- Sign in to your old account when prompted, then click Agree.
- If you receive an error stating "Gmail couldn't identify your POP server. Please enter your POP server information below", please use the following settings:
- Password: The email account's password
- User: The full email address (including @valleyinternet.com at the end)
- POP server: pop.gmail.com
- Port: 995 - "Use SSL" enabled
- On the next screen, check all the boxes (Import contacts, Import mail, Import new mail for the next 30 days), then click Start import.
Gmail will start to transfer your old email and contacts from the @valleyinternet.com account. Depending on how much mail needs to be transferred, this process may take a while!
Backup your valleyinternet.com email to your computer or Cloud drive:
Starting the backup takes just a few minutes, but exporting the data itself can take hours or even days depending on the amount of data. You may want to let this process run overnight!
- Log in to your old @valleyinternet.com account on Google's website:
- In the "Privacy & personalization" section, click Manage your data & privacy.
- Scroll down. In the "Download or delete your data" section near the bottom, and click Download your data.
- On the "Google Takeout" page, select the items you'd like to back up.
- By default, all the account's data will be selected. If you are only interested in email, first select Deselect all at the top of the list, then scroll down and check only the box next to Mail.
- Some of the other options have buttons labeled "Multiple formats". Clicking that button will allow you to choose the format in which your data will be downloaded.
- Click Next step.
- In the "Delivery method" section, you will decide how you want to receive your data. Click the arrow underneath "Delivery method" to see the options. You may choose to send a download link via email, or add it to your Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box if you use these cloud services. You can also send it to another Google or Gmail account's Google Drive.
- Under "Frequency" you can choose the frequency of the backups. We recommend using the "Export once" option at this time.
- Under "File type and size" you can choose the download's file type and the maximum file size. If the file size is larger than your maximum, Google will separate it into multiple files. We recommend leaving these settings at the defaults.
- When ready, click Create export to begin the backup process.
Depending on the amount of data you have chosen to back up, this can take many hours (and in some cases days!). However, users backing up only email can typically expect less than a few hours.
Once it completes, your email backup now exists as a file (or multiple files) on your computer, and you can access it or import it into other email software as you like.
